MEN'S HOCKEY FALLS AT WESLEYAN, 4-1
Dec. 5, 2009
MIDDLETOWN, CT - Sophomore forward Tom Salah (Gloucester, MA) netted two of the Wesleyan University men's ice hockey team's three third period goals in a 4-1 victory over visiting University of Massachusetts Boston today in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East/New England Small College Athletic Conference contest in Middletown, CT. The Cardinals improve to 2-4-0 overall and 1-3-0 in league play, while the Beacons' four-game unbeaten streak ends as they fall to 3-2-1 and 1-2-1.
Junior forward Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) and sophomore forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) combined to find sophomore forward Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL), who flicked a shot high into the far side of the net from in close on the right for his fifth goal of the season to give UMass Boston a 1-0 edge with the only goal of the first period coming at 15:08. It would be the Beacons' last lead as Wesleyan netted four unanswered goals.
Freshman forward Nick Craven (Fort Collins, CO) potted his first collegiate goal as he snapped off a wrister from the left circle on a helper from senior forward Woody Redpath (Norwich, VT) and freshman forward Ryan White (Grand Island, NY) for the lone goal of the second period at the 12:40 mark to knot the score at 1-1 for the Cardinals.
Salah scored the first of two power play goals on an assist from sophomore forward Geoff Mucha (West Chester, PA) and freshman forward John Guay (North Scituate, MA) when he poked in a loose puck on the right side of the crease to put the home team ahead for good just 3:01 into the third period. The line struck again just 2:26 later with Guay netting his second marker of the year, firing home a rebound of a shot by Mucha after Salah started the rush from the Wesleyan blue line for a 3-1 Wesleyan lead. Salah capped the scoring with his sixth goal of the season coming unassisted with a strong individual move in the UMB zone at 9:47 of the final period to give the Cardinals the 4-1 winning margin.
Senior goaltender Tim Archibald (Wellesley, MA) stopped 26 shots, including 15 in the third period, to earn the victory for Wesleyan. Sophomore Kevin Bendel (Denville, NJ) stopped 24 of 28 shots in 49:47 of action, for UMass Boston before yielding to senior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY), who came up with a save in the final 10:13 of play.
The Beacons will be in action again on Wednesday, December 9 when they host ECAC East foe Babson College at 7:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Cardinals take nearly a month off before returning to action to host Lebanon Valley College on January 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the Spurrier Tournament.
