MEN'S HOCKEY FALLS TO TRINITY, 8-3

BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Paul Jaskot (Methuen, MA) tallied his first collegiate hat trick and added an assist to lead the Trinity College (CT) men's ice hockey team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 8-3, today in an ECAC East/NESCAC contest at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons' unbeaten streak comes to an end at five straight games as they fall to 4-2-1 and 1-2-1 in league play, while the Bantams improve to 3-3-0 and 2-2-0.
Trinity owned a 2-1 edge following the first period, but exploded for five second period goals to put the game out of reach.
Jaskot's first score of the day came at 6:05 of the first period to give the Bantams a 2-0 lead and later increased their lead to 3-1 when junior defenseman Richard Hollstein (Pembroke, MA) and sophomore forward Justin Letizia (Yorktown Heights, NY) found him at 5:24 of the second period. Jaskot registered the hat trick on the power play when Hollstein and Letizia hooked up with him again at the 9:02 mark of the middle period for his fourth goal of the season and a 5-2 Trinity advantage. Jaskot assisted on the Bantams' next goal when he and Letizia set up senior blueliner Chris Diozzi (Belmont, MA) on the power play for his third goal of the year just 49 seconds later for a 6-2 lead.
Letizia put Trinity on the board with his second goal of the season coming on a dish from senior forward Riley Hicks (Calgary, ALB) and sophomore forward Adam Houli (Howell, NJ) just 2:52 into the contest for a 1-0 margin. UMass Boston later cracked the scoring column when junior forward Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) and freshman defenseman Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) combined to feed sophomore forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) on the power play for his third goal of the year coming at 13:20 of the first period to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Beacons later pulled to within 3-2 when junior forward Anthony Casmano (Wheaton, IL) took a pass from sophomore forward Zach Barron (Saint Louis, MO) and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season at 6:54 of the second period.
Freshman forward Sean McCarthy (Duxbury, MA) later gave the Bantams a 7-2 advantage on an assist from sophomore defenseman Derek Sandberg (Saint Iazare, QUE) at 10:32 of the second stanza with his first collegiate goal and followed that with his second goal of the day at 4:02 of the third period on a feed from Sandberg and junior blueliner Ryan Crapser (Paxton, MA) for an 8-2 lead.
UMass Boston sophomore defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) capped the afternoon's scoring with his third goal of the year coming on an assist from Tufman and Kranzky at the 12:21 mark of the final period.
Junior goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) stopped 11 of 17 shots in 29:51 of action for the Beacons, before yielding to senior Chris Testa (Massapequa, NY), who turned away 18 of 20 shots in the final 30:09. Sophomore goaltender Wesley Vesprini (Lexington, MA) made 22 saves to earn the victory for Trinity.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Wednesday, December 10 when it travels to Babson Park, MA to take on ECAC East foe Babson College at 7:00 p.m., while the Bantams host Wesleyan University on December 9 at 7:30 p.m.
