Box Score

BABSON PARK, MA - The University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey team scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period to defeat host Babson College tonight, 4-2, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference East contest in Babson Park, MA at the Babson Skating Center. The Beacons improve to 5-2-1 overall, for their best start since 1987-88 when they started 6-2-0, and are 2-2-1 in league play to tie for second place in the standings with five points, while the Beavers fall to 3-3-1 and 2-2-0 in ECAC East play.

UMass Boston faced a 2-0 deficit after the first period, before freshman defenseman Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) and freshman forward Jim Ennis (Roslindale, MA) set up freshman forward Kyle Tejchma (Fruitport, MI) for his second goal of the season on a one-timer off a centering pass from Sands at 3:08 of the second period to make it 2-1. UMB would then have a prime opportunity to tie the contest when Babson was whistled for a five-minute major later in the period, but the Beavers successfully killed the penalty to take a 2-1 edge into the second intermission.

Freshman forward Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) wasted no time in pulling the Beacons even when he found the lower right corner with a wrister from the slot on a feed from sophomore forward David Lun (Grand Rapids, MI) and freshman forward Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL) for his third tally of the season just 1:35 into the third period to knot the contest at 2-2. Sophomore forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) gave UMass Boston its first lead of the night when he tucked a rebound of freshman blueliner Brian Marks' (Brownville, NY) shot inside the right post, less than three minutes later, for his fourth goal of the year at the 4:14 mark of the final period. Sophomore defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) was also credited with an assist.

Babson would have numerous scoring chances over the next 15 minutes, but a botched 2-on-0 break and several brilliant saves by junior goaltender Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) kept the Beavers off the board.

The Beacons held off Babson for the final five minutes of play, thanks in part to a another five-minute major called on the Beavers to go with two additional minors as junior Kris Kranzky (Glendora, CA) took advantage of an open net with just 42.2 seconds to go in the game on an assist from senior forward Jacob Cline (Atlanta, GA) and Lun for a 4-2 margin.

Babson jumped all over the visitors in the early going, scoring twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead after one. First-year Mike Hoban (Medfield, MA) scored the first when he squeezed his own rebound inside the right post at 13:27, and senior Alex DiPietro (Winthrop, MA) netted the second when his slap shot from the right point glanced off the UMass Boston goaltender and trickled over the goal line at 18:17.

Donovan was magnificent in the win for the Beacons, finishing with 33 saves in net, including 22 straight after surrendering the two first-period goals to record his 21st career victory to tie him for third on the school's career win list with Paul Morrissette (1980-84). Freshman goalie Andrew Peabody (Marblehead, MA) played 58:27 in goal for Babson, making a total of 23 saves.

UMass Boston will be in action again on Monday, December 29 when it hosts Westfield State College in the first round of the 44th Annual Codfish Bowl at 5:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Beavers travel to Oswego, NY on January 2 to take on Augsburg College in the first round of the Pathfinder Bank Oswego Classic at 4:00 p.m.
