BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Pat Nelson (Cary, NC) was the only player to convert a shot during the shootout to give the Westfield State College men's ice hockey team a 1-0 shootout edge over host University of Massachusetts Boston tonight in the first round of the 44th Annual Codfish Bowl, the second oldest college hockey invitational in the nation, at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The shootout victory came after the teams played to a 4-4 tie through an overtime period and sends the Owls to tomorrow's Championship Game, facing Fitchburg State College, a 5-2 winner over Suffolk University in the other first round contest, at 5:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center. Westfield State is now 7-2-2 on the season, while the Beacons stand at 5-2-2 and will take on Suffolk in tomorrow's consolation tilt at 2:00 p.m. The shootout was the first-ever in the 44-year history of the Codfish Bowl.
UMass Boston skated out to a 4-1 third period lead, before the Owls netted three goals in a span of seven minutes in the final period to secure the tie. Senior center Jeff Chillson (Enfield, CT) took a feed from freshman forward Benni Schennach (Ehrwald, Austria) on the power play to net his fifth goal of the season and cut the deficit to 4-2 with 9:48 to go in the period for Westfield State, before sophomore defenseman Ted Battaglia (Lake Hopatcong, NJ) found the back of the net with a power play goal of his own to pull the Owls to within 4-3 less than two minutes later. Junior forward Casey Mignone (Ramsey, NJ) knotted the contest at 4-4 for Westfield State with a wrap-around goal around the left post with just 3:30 to play in regulation, before the game was sent to overtime, where neither team was able to score.
Sophomore defenseman Brett Calhoun (Tulsa, OK) cracked the scoring column when sophomore forwards Vinnie Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA) and Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) found him for his fourth goal of the season for the only score of the first period with just 73 seconds left to give UMB a 1-0 edge. Nelson fed sophomore forward Dennis Zak (Dover, NJ) for his team-leading 14th goal of the year, while being short-handed at 4:12 of the middle period to tie the game for the Owls.
Sophomore forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) wasted no time getting the lead back for UMass Boston when Atsoff dished him his fifth goal of the year just 30 seconds into the third session. Freshman blueliner Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) potted the next two goals for the Beacons with an assist from Calhoun on a five-on-three power play at the 2:51 mark and a helper from freshmen forwards Bryan Albert (Redlands, CA) and Chris Wyman (Bartlett, IL) at 6:26 to give him three scores on the season and UMass Boston a 4-1 lead.
Sophomore goaltender Ray Monroe (Shrewsbury, MA) made a career-high 48 saves and stopped all three shots he saw in the shootout for Westfield State, while junior Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) turned away 26 shots for the Beacons, who held a 52-30 shot advantage.
