Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Freshman forward Andrew Flynn (Stamford, CT) scored the game-winner with two seconds left in the second period and junior goalie Jeff Rose (Collinsville, CT) made a career-high 52 saves to lead the Suffolk University men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over host University of Massachusetts Boston to capture the championship of the 45th Annual Codfish Bowl, the second oldest college hockey invitational in the nation, tonight at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Rams win their first Codfish Bowl in their fourth appearance and improve to 5-6-2 on the season, while the Beacons fall to 5-3-1 in their 19th appearance in the Codfish Bowl title game.

The three total goals were the least scored by both teams in a Codfish Bowl championship game since Boston State College defeated Salem State College, 2-0, in the Second Annual Codfish Bowl in 1966.

Flynn netted the game-winner for Suffolk with a slap shot from between the circles that found the back of the net at 19:58 of the second stanza on a feed from classmate Jason Molle (Stoneham, MA) and junior forward Paul Weisser (Longmeadow, MA) for a 2-1 edge.

UMass Boston got on the board first with the only goal of the first period when junior forwards Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) and Matt Atsoff (Macomb, MI) set up sophomore defenseman Wayne Sands (Chalfant, PA) for his first tally of the season coming on the power play at 7:51 of the first period. That would be the last goal of the night for the home team as Rose stopped 21 shots in the period, while the Beacons held the Rams without a shot for the entire period.

Senior forward Pat Welch (Dorchester, MA) fired the first shot of the contest for Suffolk at 1:32 of the second period and later combined with senior blueliner Joe Drago (Waltham, MA) to set up senior forward Niles Moore (Columbus, OH), who picked up a rebound in front of a sprawled-out Beacons' goalie for his third goal of the tournament and team-leading ninth of the season with 3:10 left in the middle period to pull the Rams even at 1-1.

The Beacons dominated the shots to the tune of 53-20, including the aforementioned first period and a 22-3 margin in the final period.

Senior goaltender Ryan Donovan (Rexford, NY) made 18 saves for UMass Boston.

The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, January 8 when they head to New London, CT to take on Connecticut College in a NESCAC/ECAC East conference match-up at 7:00 p.m., while Suffolk takes on University of Southern Maine on January 12 at 7:00 p.m.
