LEISER LEADS FITCHBURG STATE OVER MEN'S ICE HOCKEY, 4-1, FOR SECOND CODFISH BOWL CHAMPIONSHIP
Dec. 30, 2010
BOSTON, MA - Junior goaltender Bobby Leiser (Monroe, NY) made a career-high 58 saves to lead the Fitchburg State University men's ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory over host University of Massachusetts Boston to capture the championship of the 46th Annual Codfish Bowl, the second oldest college hockey invitational in the nation, tonight at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Falcons win their second Codfish Bowl in their fifth appearance and improve to 7-3-0 on the season, while the Beacons, who received five votes in the most recent USCHO.com national poll, fall to 7-3-0 in their 20th appearance in the Codfish Bowl title game.
UMass Boston got on the board first with the only goal of the first period when senior forward Eric Tufman (Abington, PA) and junior forward Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) set up freshman forward Travis Daniel (North Brunswick, NJ) for his sixth tally of the season coming at 6:57 of the first period. That would be the last goal of the night for the home team as Leiser stopped their remaining 49 shots on the night.
Fitchburg knotted the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, MA) scored his fourth marker of the season on a power play at 7:44 into the second period. Lawler's goal was assisted by junior forward Cory Callen and senior forward Chris Riggs (Sewell, NJ). The Falcons kept the momentum going to take the lead with just 1:18 to play in the middle frame on senior forward Andrew Jones's third goal of the campaign. With the help of sophomore forward Curtis Nikitas (Fitchburg, MA) and sophomore blueliner Brett Provost (Ludlow, MA), Jones beat UMass Boston senior netminder Thomas Speer (Wausau, WI) to the far upper post with a slap shot from just outside the circle to make it 2-1, Fitchburg. Jones's goal would prove to be the eventual game-winner.
Despite being outshot 27-4 in the third period, the Falcons were able to tack on two more tallies to seal their second-ever Codfish Bowl championship. Freshman defensemen Shawn Bradley (Tewksbury, MA) made it a 3-1 game with his first collegiate goal 7:29 into the final period after he was set up by Callen and classmate Nick Saino (Duryea, PA). Provost added an insurance marker, his first of the year, with 10:35 to play in the contest to seal the win for Fitchburg State.
The Beacons dominated the shots to the tune of 59-28, but for the second consecutive championship saw a visiting goaltender come up with a 50+ save outing.
Speer made 24 saves in net for UMass Boston.
The Beacons will be in action again on Friday, January 7 when they host Connecticut College in a NESCAC/ECAC East conference match-up at 7:00 p.m., while Fitchburg State heads to Worcester, MA to take on Becker College in an 8:30 p.m. match up on January 4.
