SPEER NAMED ECAC EAST MEN'S HOCKEY GOALIE OF THE WEEK

CENTERVILLE, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston men's ice hockey player Thomas Speer (Wausau, WI) has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference East Goalie of the Week for the week of January 16-22, it was announced today by the conference.

Speer posted a 2-0-0 mark on the week by picking up victories over UMass Dartmouth and the University of New England. On Tuesday vs. UMass Dartmouth, the senior made 24 stops recording a .923 save percentage. Over the weekend against UNE, the goaltender notched 33 saves and posted a .917 save percentage in the win. On the week, Speer combined to make 57 stops while recording a .919 save percentage.

The senior has enjoyed a solid year since transferring to UMass Boston from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point for the start of his final campaign. Speer is currently 6-3-0 on the season with a team-high .912 save percentage. Over nine games he has posted a 2.45 goals against average which currently ranks fourth in the ECAC East.

UMass Boston is currently 13-4-0 on the season, matching the best start in program history since the 1987-88 season. UMB also received attention in the national Division III poll this week, receiving 13 votes in the United State College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll. The Beacons rank first in the ECAC East and fourth in the nation among Division III institutions with 4.53 goals per game and have won four games in a row for the second time this season. The team will be in action again on Friday, January 28 when they travel to Northfield, VT to face No. 3 Norwich University in a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
