BOSTON, MA - The University of Massachusetts men's ice hockey team will host the 46th Annual Codfish Bowl on Wednesday, December 29 and Thursday, December 30 at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The tournament is the nation's second-oldest hockey invitational, next to the Beanpot.
The first game will feature the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards (5-3-2) and the Fitchburg State University Falcons (5-3-0) on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. UMass Boston's Beacons (6-2-0) will host the Assumption College Greyhounds (5-5-0) at 5:00 p.m. in the second game of the day's first round. The consolation game will be played at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday with the championship contest to follow at 5:00 p.m.
UMass Boston makes its record 29th appearance in the Codfish Bowl after inheriting the tournament from Boston State College in 1982. The Beacons are 24-30-2 in the tournament and captured championships in 1983, 1997 and 2007. Fitchburg State returns to make its fifth tournament appearance, owning the 2001 Codfish Bowl crown. Both Wentworth and Assumption are first-timers in the event and become the 37th and 38th schools to participate in the prestigious tournament.
The Beacons are currently 6-2-0 on the season, 3-2-0 in the ECAC East, to match the best start in school history since the 1988-89 season and the best in-conference record through the first semester since the 1990-91 campaign. UMass Boston also received attention in the national Division III poll before the semester break, receiving five votes in the United State College Hockey Online (USCHO) poll. This was the second time this season the squad has been recognized in the poll, also receiving three votes in the November 29 poll. The Beacons rank first in the ECAC East and fourth in the nation among Division III institutions with 4.62 goals per game and have won six of their last seven games.
