Nichols Hands Lacrosse First Loss of the Season

DUDLEY, Mass. – A five-goal fourth quarter secured a 14-7 win for Nichols College as the Bison handed lacrosse their first loss of the year Thursday afternoon at Vendetti Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing by just three goals heading into the final quarter, the Bison's offense rattled-off three straight goals, before the Beacons could score their first.  From there, Nichols tacked on two more tallies to secure the non-conference win and improve to 4-0 on the year.

Clay Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) led UMB's attacked with a pair of goals, while Josh Holmes finished with a goal and an assist.  For the Bison Cole Fontana was consistent all night as he recorded four goals, to go along with a pair of helpers.  Paul Tessier was just as dangerous for Nichols, as he finished with four goals and one assist.

Defensively, Derek DiPietrantonio (Watertown, Mass.) and Matt Murphy (Watertown, Mass.) each collected a team-high three caused turnovers, with DiPietrantonio also finishing with a game-high seven ground balls.

Freshman Alex Surette (Melrose, Mass.) collected six stops in his first loss, while for the Bison James Keane improved to 2-0 on the year with his 11 save performance.

For the first time this season, the Beacons did not win the battle at the face-off dot as the Bison finished 17-for-23, with Kroy Arnold (Syracuse, N.Y.) earning four of the Beacons six face-off wins.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMass Boston finished 15-for-17 on clear attempts, and were 0-for-5 on man-up opportunities
  • The Beacons held a 31-30 advantage in total shots
  • The Bison did hold a 30-28 advantage in ground balls

WHO'S NEXT
