MEN'S LACROSSE BEATEN BY SALVE REGINA, 17-6

BOSTON, MA - Sophomore attackman Brendan Rooney (West Newton, MA), freshman attackman Brendan Carroll (Garden City, NY) and freshman attackman Chris Walker (Marshfield, MA) each tallied five points with four goals and an assist to combine for 12 goals to lead the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team to a 17-6 victory over host University of Massachusetts Boston today at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 0-2 in their home opener, while the Seahawks improve to 5-1.
Salve Regina netted the first four goals of the day with first period scores coming from Walker, sophomore midfielder Evan Gates (Ridge, NJ) and Carroll, before senior middie Brian Whelan (East Setauket, NY) began the second period with a goal at the 12:16 mark. UMass Boston got on the board when junior attackman Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) found the back of the net at 10:37 to cut the deficit to 4-1, but the Seahawks scored the next five goals to take a 9-1 advantage. Gates and sophomore midfielder Michael Augustus (Bristol, RI) each scored to increase the margin to 6-1 and Walker closed out the half with a pair of goals for an 8-1 lead. Rooney gave the visitors a 9-1 lead at 9:51 on a man-up goal to begin the second half scoring.
Sophomore midfielder John Canty (Milton, MA) countered for the Beacons, as they would the entire quarter, with a man-up goal as well, coming at the 7:28 mark. Salve Regina's Carroll and UMB senior attackman Peter Kovach (Cohasset, MA) traded goals to put the score at 11-4 in favor of the Seahawks. Rooney added two more goals in the period for Salve Regina, but Nunn and junior attackman Aaron Pollock (Belmont, MA) answered with a goal apiece in the final 52 seconds of the third quarter for UMass Boston to pull it to within 13-6.
Walker halted the Beacons' momentum with a goal just 50 seconds into the fourth quarter for the Seahawks and freshman midfielder Kevin Murphy (Yorba Linda, CA) followed with his first collegiate goal. Rooney tallied another man-up goal and Carroll capped the scoring for Salve Regina with 5:51 showing in the final quarter.
Walker also added nine ground balls to his day for the Seahawks, while Augustus and junior defender Nathaniel Burns (Sandwich, MA) each scooped up six ground balls.
Kovach led UMass Boston with a pair of goals and an assist and added a ground ball, while Nunn finished with a pair of goals and two ground balls. Pollock chipped in with a goal and an assist in addition to four ground balls and Canty came up with a game-high 10 ground balls to go with his score.
Senior goalie Brian Walker (Marshfield, MA) earned the victory for Salve Regina with 14 saves in 47:19 of action, while sophomore goaltender Brendan Vaughan (Newton, MA) stopped the only two shots he saw in the final 12:41 of relief. Sophomore Matt Gradin (Milton, MA) turned away 13 shots for the Beacons.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, March 28 when it hosts Salem State College in a Little East Conference match at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Seahawks host Nichols College on Tuesday, March 24 at 4:00 p.m.
