NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team scored three times in the second quarter to take the lead for good and went on to defeat visiting University of Massachusetts Boston, 8-2, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Saturday.
Senior midfielder Steve Colella (Wakefield, MA) broke a 1-1 tie when he scored at 12:40 of the second quarter. Sophomore attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA) made it 3-1 two minutes later, and junior attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA) added a goal at 6:51 to give the Corsairs a 4-1 halftime lead.
Senior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA) scored for UMass Dartmouth in the third quarter, before the Beacons' Aaron Pollock (Belmont, MA) scored to cut the lead to 5-2. But UMass Dartmouth scored the only three goals of the fourth quarter to account for the final score.
Foster had two goals for the Corsairs, while Arsenault added a goal and three assists and Leary scored once and assisted twice. Colella, senior midfielder Matt Swirbalus (Weymouth, MA), sophomore midfielder Nick Campbell (Rutland, VT) and freshman attackman Dan Stefanini (Hopkinton, MA) also scored for UMD, while junior midfielder Al Craven (Milton, MA) joined Pollock in scoring for the Beacons.
UMass Dartmouth outshot UMass Boston, 36-14. Corsair freshman goaltender Kevin Pelsinski (Merrimack, NH) made eight saves, while UMB freshman goalie Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) made 15.
The Corsairs improved to 4-5 and 1-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while UMass Boston dropped to 1-4 and 0-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Southern Maine next Saturday. The Beacons will visit MIT on Tuesday, April 7 at 4:00 p.m.
