MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS TO MIT, 9-6

BOSTON, MA - Freshman attackman Gabe Blanchet (Hadley, MA) netted three goals and senior midfielder Corey Garvey tallied four points to lead the MIT men's lacrosse team to a 9-6 victory over host University of Massachusetts Boston today at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 2-5 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 3-4.
UMass Boston middie Al Craven (Milton, MA) potted the first goal of the third quarter to give the home team a 5-4 edge at 11:03 of the third quarter, but MIT netted five of the next six goals to pull away for the victory. Blanchet tied the score at 5-5 with an assist from junior midfielder John Kucharczyk (Manhasset, NY) at the 9:31 mark of the third quarter to end a scoring drought that lasted 19:33. Junior attackman Dan Piemont (Summit, NJ) then took a feed from Garvey to give the Engineers a 6-5 lead at 8:07 of the quarter. Senior attackman Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) answered for the Beacons just 33 seconds later to knot the game at 6-6, but Piemont put MIT back on top for good with his team-leading 16th goal of the year on a helper from junior defender Alex Andrzejewski (Powell, OH) at 6:02 of the quarter. Garvey and Blanchet added insurance goals for the Engineers with Garvey's capping the third quarter scoring at 4:44 and Blanchet's serving as the only score of the final quarter at the 10:59 mark on a helper from Garvey.
UMass Boston got on the board first, courtesy of sophomore midfielder Pat Driscoll's (Hingham, MA) 11th goal of the year just 57 seconds into the contest, but MIT responded with four unanswered goals. Senior middie Tom Hay (Alexandria, VA) bookended the flurry with a goal at 12:42 of the opening period and another tally with just 64 seconds left in the quarter on a man-up situation for a 4-1 lead. Blanchet and sophomore midfielder Carl Tilbury (Newbury, Berkshire, UK) both found the back of the net in the period as well for the Engineers.
The Beacons' defense clamped down in the second quarter, while the offense put three scores on the board. Freshman midfielder Ian Ferrari (Mashpee, MA) found the back of the net for the second time this season and Craven cashed in on a pair of man-up opportunities with the second coming with 54 ticks left before the half to pull UMass Boston even at 4-4.
Freshman goalie Christopher Rullan (Wexford, PA) stopped six shots to earn the victory for MIT, while sophomore goaltender Anthony Fitti (Haverford, PA) turned away 12 shots for the Beacons.
Hay finished with two goals and an assist for the Engineers in addition to three ground balls, while junior midfielder Nick Sisler (Waterbury Center, VT) registered a pair of assists and added a game-high eight ground balls. Junior middie Justin Myers (Highland Falls, NY) was outstanding on the faceoff, winning 11 of 16 jousts, while coming away with six ground balls.
Craven led UMass Boston with three goals and scooped up three ground balls, while senior defender Patrick McDonagh (Dorchester, MA) led the defense with five ground balls and a caused turnover. Driscoll finished with a goal, two ground balls and four caused turnovers.
The Beacons will be in action again on Thursday, April 8 when they travel to Buzzards Bay, MA to take on Massachusetts Maritime Academy at 7:00 p.m., while MIT hosts Springfield College on April 10 at 11:00 a.m.
