MIT HOLDS OFF MEN'S LACROSSE, 9-6
April 7, 2009
CAMBRIDGE, MA - Four second-half goals proved to be the difference as MIT defeated University of Massachusetts Boston, 9-6, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Tuesday. Ernie Park paced the Engineers (4-5) with four points on a goal and three assists. Senior attackman Peter Kovach (Cohasset, MA) led the way for the Beacons (1-5) with three goals.
Park put the Cardinal and Gray on the board at the 6:35 mark of the opening frame by connecting on a feed from Ryan Ballentine. UMass Boston evened the score 23 seconds later courtesy of Kovach's unassisted strike. Ballentine found Corey Garvey for the go-ahead-goal as Patrick Shannon extended the hosts' margin following a pass from Park. Sophomore John Canty's (Milton, MA) solo effort cut the Beacons' deficit in half (3-2) with 39 seconds left in the period.
Park set up the Engineers' next two goals with Neil Zimmerman and Garvey finding the back of the net, the latter coming in the form of an extra-man tally. UMass Boston responded with Canty scoring a man-up goal on a feed from junior midfielder Al Craven (Milton, MA). The Beacons once again came within one (5-4) 11 seconds before the intermission as Craven's field-length pass found Kovach, who quickly put the ball past MIT goalkeeper Garth Grove.
The third quarter was a defensive battle as Zimmerman provided the lone marker with 9:51 on the clock, helping increase the Engineers' edge to 6-4.
Garvey extended MIT's lead with an unassisted goal at the 13:28 mark of the final quarter. Two minutes later, the Cardinal and Gray's Ebbe Strathairn picked up a groundball during a clearing attempt by the Beacons and sprinted to the net, burying his first goal of the season. UMass Boston continued to attack, ending its scoring drought when junior middie Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) connected on a feed from Canty with 9:57 on the clock. Exactly 13 seconds later, Nunn found Kovach to narrow the gap to two (8-6). MIT added to the scoring spree courtesy of an unassisted goal by Shannon 16 seconds later. Solid defensive play by both sides down the stretch resulted in the final score.
Garvey posted a hat-trick to go along with four groundballs for the Engineers. Shannon and Zimmerman each contributed two goals as Shannon picked up a team-high five groundballs. Ballentine totaled two assists while Strathairn notched four groundballs. In net, Grove finished with 11 saves.
Canty recorded a game-high nine groundballs in addition to two goals and an assist. Nunn posted a goal and an assist while Craven dished out a pair of assists. Senior midfielder Robert Schwartz (Philadelphia, PA) bolstered the defense with six groundballs while freshman goalie Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) collected 12 saves.
MIT returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when its hosts Pilgrim Lacrosse League foe Babson College. UMass Boston continues non-conference play on Thursday, April 9 when it travels to Wentworth Institute of Technology for a 7:00 p.m. match.
