WILLIMANTIC, CT - The Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team netted the first seven goals of the game and went on to a 20-7 victory over University of Massachusetts Boston today in a Little East Conference match in Willimantic, CT. The Beacons fall to 1-9 overall and 0-5 in LEC play, while the Warriors improve to 9-3 and 5-0.
Senior attackman Matthew Savage (Southington, CT) netted all three of his goals on the day in the first quarter for Eastern Connecticut, while sophomore attackman Brendan Hoppey (Shoreham, NY) found the back of the net twice and senior midfielder DJ Simmons (Mystic, CT) and junior attackman Vinny Tornatore (Norwalk, CT) each tallied a score as well. Senior attackman Peter Kovach (Cohasset, MA) put UMass Boston on the board at 6:23 of the opening quarter to cut the deficit to 7-1. Tornatore and the Beacons' Al Craven (Milton, MA) traded goals for an 8-2 score, before the Warriors strung together nine consecutive goals for a 17-2 advantage, fueled by two apiece from Simmons and Tornatore.
UMass Boston scored the only three goals of the third quarter when Craven fired a shot into the back of the net at the 11:34 mark and freshman middie Eric Collins (Somerville, MA) followed at 8:37. Kovach capped the third quarter scoring with his second tally of the day at 1:47 to pull UMB to within 17-5.
Sophomore midfielder Pat Gority (Glastonbury, CT) and freshman middie Kyle Bainton (North Attleboro, MA) each scored goals for Eastern Connecticut to start the fourth quarter, but Craven netted his third and fourth goals of the afternoon for the Beacons to make it 19-7. Bainton capped the scoring for both teams with 46 seconds left in the contest to give the Warriors a 20-7 lead.
Craven added a ground ball to his four goals for UMass Boston, while sophomore midfielder John Canty (Milton, MA) was credited with a pair of assists and two ground balls. Senior midfielder Robert Schwartz (Philadelphia, PA) and sophomore middie Devin Hutchinson (Port Huron, MI) each scooped up five ground balls to lead UMB.
Matthew Savage tallied five points on three goals and two assists to go with a ground ball for Eastern Connecticut State, while Tornatore contributed with four goals and an assist. Hoppey finished with two goals and two assist in addition to two ground balls and Simmons had three goals and added a ground ball.
Junior Aaron Pollock (Belmont, MA) stopped nine shots on the day for the Beacons, while Kyle Savage (Southington, CT) earned the victory for the Warriors, despite allowing the only two shots he saw to score in the first 23:20 of action. Freshman Jamie Tommins (Fairfield, CT) stopped one of four shots on the day in 21:40 of time and sophomore Stephen Goomrigian (Norwalk, CT) turned away one of the three shots he faced in the fourth quarter.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Tuesday, April 21 when it hosts Little East Conference foe University of Southern Maine at 3:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while Eastern Connecticut State hosts Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday, April 19 at 1:00 p.m.
