Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Senior attackman Vinny Tornatore (Norwalk, CT) and junior attackman Grant Albertson (New Canaan, CT) combined for 10 points, each scoring three goals and dishing out two assist to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University men's lacrosse team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 15-7, in a Little East Conference match today at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 4-9 overall, including 0-5 in LEC play, while the Warriors improve to 9-4 overall, 4-1 in the LEC.

The Warriors jumped ahead early, netting six first period goals, and never looked back. Junior attackman Brian Fechtmann (Levittown, NY) opened the game's scoring and would later net his second goal of the period to put Eastern on top, 4-0, with 6:41 remaining in the first. Junior middie John Canty (Milton, MA) got the Beacons on the board with his 17th goal of the season at the 2:43 mark but junior attackman Jeremy Cogliano (Bedford, MA) answered only 18 seconds later, to give the Warriors a 5-1 cushion. The visitors would tack on a man-up goal, scored by sophomore middie Salieu Bolivar (Norwalk, CT) before the quarter's close to increase their lead to 6-1.

UMass Boston battled back into the game by scoring the first two goals in the second quarter, cutting the Eastern lead to 6-3. Sophomore middie Pat Driscoll (Hingham, MA) made it 6-2 when he found the back of the net from an assist by senior middie Al Craven (Milton, MA). The Beacons were then able to take advantage of a Warrior penalty and convert a man-up opportunity at the 7:16 mark when senior attackman Dale Nunn (Hillsborough, NJ) netted his 22nd goal of the season off a Canty assist. UMass Boston appeared to have the momentum heading into halftime before the Warriors struck again with only one second remaining in the half when senior middie Zach Malouf (Norwich, CT) connected on his 14th goal of the season to give Eastern Connecticut State University the 7-3 halftime cushion.

The Warriors opened the third quarter strong, scoring the first three goals of the half to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Fornatore had his hand in all three tallies, netting two and assisting on the third, which came on a man-up score by sophomore attackman Michael Sullinger (Brookfield, CT).

Craven's unassisted goal with 4:03 remaining in the third made it a 10-4 contest but another Eastern man-up goal by Tornatore pushed its lead back to seven goals, making it 11-4 with 2:30 remaining in the third. Driscoll potted his second goal of the afternoon with 1:51 to play in the third before Albertson answered with his second tally of the day with only 32 seconds remaining in the third to give Eastern the 12-5 lead after three quarters of action.

Driscoll and Albertson traded goals early in the fourth quarter to make it 13-6, Eastern. With 12:52 remaining in the game, Malouf potted his second goal of the contest before Driscoll tallied his fourth goal of the game, 34th of the season, to cut the Warriors' lead to 14-7. Freshman middie Kevin Fechtmann (Levittown, NY) rounded out Eastern's scoring with his first collegiate goal coming with 1:37 left to play to make it a 15-7 final.

UMass Boston sophomore goalie Anthony Fitti (Havertown, PA) was stellar in relief, playing the final three quarters making 11 saves. Freshman Donald Berube (Tewksbury, MA) made three saves in net for Eastern Connecticut State to earn the victory.

Both squads will be back in action on Tuesday, April 27. The Beacons travel to Gorham, ME to take on the University of Southern Maine in a 4:00 p.m. tilt while the Warriors host Western Connecticut State University in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
