CANTY NAMED LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE MEN'S LACROSSE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - University of Massachusetts Boston men's lacrosse player John Canty (Milton, MA) has been named Little East Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week for his play during the week of March 16-22, it was announced today by the conference.

Canty made the full-time move from attack to midfield in the Beacons' only game of the week vs. Salve Regina University on March 21 and came up with a career-high 10 ground balls, while winning 58% (11-19) of his face-offs. The sophomore also chipped in with a goal in a man-up situation for UMass Boston.

The midfielder currently leads the Beacons with 12 ground balls on the season and ranks fourth in the conference with 6.00 per game. A Milton High School product, Canty tops the team with a 60% win mark on face-offs (12-20) and ranked third with three points on a pair of scores and an assist. He also leads the team with both of its man-up goals for the season, which ties him for first among league leaders with 1.00 per game.

Canty started 14 of 15 games last year as a freshman attackman and led UMass Boston with 27 goals and 43 points, including a team-high seven man-up tallies. He also picked up 35 ground balls to place ninth on the team.

The Beacons are currently 0-2 on the season and will be in action again on Saturday, March 28 when they host Salem State College to open the Little East Conference slate at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center field.
