GORHAM, Maine – With a free-kick goal from Michael Daniel the Huskies of Southern Maine (2-8, 1-2 Little East) handed men's soccer (2-5-2, 0-3 Little East) their third loss in the last four contests as they defeated the Beacons by the final of 1-0 Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference match at Hannaford Field.
The deciding tally came in the 61st minute, and marked the second game-winner of the season for Daniel. The freshman midfielder placed the ball right outside the Beacons goal box following a foul by UMB.
He would then strike the ball perfectly as it bent around the Beacons wall and placed it to the low far post. That shot was part of a six shot second half for Southern Maine, and capped off a nine shot afternoon for the host Huskies. UMass, who led the first half with six shots of-their-own, did not register a shot in the final 45 minutes of play.
Sophomore goalie Bryce Menard (Randolph, Mass.) registered four saves in the contest, while Southern Maine's Jeremy Turner posted four stops of his own. The shutout was the first of the year for Turner and also marked his second win as well.
Combined the two teams recorded six corner kicks, with Southern Maine posting four. Douglas Silviera (Revere, Mass.) and Alejandro Lazalde (Monterrey, Mexico) each recorded two shots to lead the Beacons offense.
Men's Soccer returns to action on Monday when they host Newbury College at 3:30 p.m.
