Silveira Pushes Men’s Soccer Past Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Led by Douglas Silveira's (Revere, Mass.) game-winning tally in the 73rd minute and an assist in the first half, men's soccer recorded their second-straight win as they defeated the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy by the final of 2-1 Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium in the final non-conference match of 2012 for the Beacons.

With the victory the Beacons improved to 5-9-2 on the year, while Mass. Maritime fell to 6-8-2.  Silviera's game-winning tally came when the sophomore converted a feed from freshman Dylan Voss (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and lofted a shot from 20 yards out into the back right corner of the net.

The Beacons broke the scoreless draw in the first half when Lucas Ordosgoitia (Cartagena, Colombia) scored on a breakaway that was set up by Silviera and senior Brian Sanz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil).

Senior Derek Young ended the shutout bid for the host Buccaneers in the 58th minute of play when he blasted a feed from freshman Connor McInnis in the upper right corner for his third goal of the season.  Massachusetts Maritime had a chance to force an extra session in the closing minute of play, as a shot from senior Adam Vieira went just wide of the net with 14 seconds remaining.

Sophomore Bryce Menard (Randolph, Mass.) picked up the win in goal for UMass Boston with nine saves, including five in the second half, while senior Brett Young made eight stops (five after intermission) in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Buccaneers outshot the Beacons by an 18-12 margin and held a 6-2 edge in corners for the contest.

Men's Soccer returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Plymouth State University on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the final match of the 2012 season.
