Second Half Goals Sink Men’s Soccer at Gordon
WENHAM, Mass. – Despite a 22-15 advantage in shots, the Scots of Gordon College used two late goals in the second half to earn a 2-0 non-conference win over men's soccer Tuesday evening at the Brigham Complex.
The loss, which ended a two game shutout streak for the Beacons, dropped their overall record to 3-2. For the Scots they improved to 4-0 overall with the victory as they were perhaps the toughest challenge for UMB so far this season.
"Give credit to Gordon they are a very good team and they are very well coached. The first half was chaotic, but we hung in there and got to the break with the score tied at 0-0. Both teams had opportunities but didn't finish. I thought we thoroughly out played them in the second half on all sides of the ball and in all honesty could have been up 4-0. Credit their keeper for some incredible saves but we have to finish," said head coach Jake Beverlin.
Both goals for Gordon came within a two minute window deep in the second half as they broke the 0-0 tie at the 74:56 minute mark. Before UMB was able to recover, the Scots struck again driving home the clinching goal one minute 21 seconds later.
Notching the first goal for Gordon was Evan Crocker off of a Kellen Kasiguran assist. Kasiguran then sealed the win for his team on an unassisted tally. The goals for Crocker and Kasiguran were the third of the year for both players.
After the first half of play in which UMB held a 9-6 advantage in the shots column. The Beacons returned to the field for the second half and dominated play offensively firing 13 shots, while limiting Gordon to nine.
UMB also led the contest in corner kicks as they finished with nine, five in the second half, while Gordon managed just two corners in each half.
Between the pipes Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.), who was named the Little East Conference Goalkeeper of the Week on Monday, combined for five stops.
The Beacons return to action on Thursday when they host Fitchburg State University at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference match.
