BOSTON, Mass. - With two goals and an assist from junior Marcus Pizzetti (Malden, Mass.) men's soccer recorded their 10th win of the year as they defeated Massachusetts Maritime Academy by the final of 4-0 Tuesday afternoon at Clark Athletic Center Field.
The victory marks only the eighth time in program history that the Beacons have recorded 10 or more wins in a season. The last was in 2011 when they closed out the campaign with 11 victories under former head coach Myles Berry. UMass Boston now stands at 10-6-1, while the Buccaneers fell to 6-6-2.
For Pizzetti his five point performance marked the first time the junior forward has recorded at least one goal and one assist in a match since October 9 in the 4-0 win over Emerson College. His showing on Tuesday also marked the second most points recorded in a single game by the Malden native, with his career-high still standing strong at eight.
Tuesday's victory also brought an end to a two-game skid for the Beacons, which started last Tuesday with a tough 1-0 loss to MASCAC opponent Worcester State University.
On the day UMB dominated play outshooting the Buccaneers 20-8 with 50% of those shots ending up on goal. The shutout by Alfonso Rosales (Revere, Mass.) marked his third complete blanking of the year as he made four stops.
UMass Boston wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in the their final non-conference game of the 2013 regular season as Edmilson Barros (Boston, Mass.) scored his 12th marker of the year just five minutes. After receiving a long pass from Matheus Reis (Somerville, Mass.) the freshman drove the ball to the near post which caught the Buccaneers Joe Cohen by surprise.
From there the match would remain 1-0 in favor of the home team from approximately 26 minutes until Pizzetti was able to record his first tally of the afternoon. The junior hit a perfect one-timer to the far post after Paul Erne (San Diego, Calif.) made a quick pass to his teammate right outside the box. The assist was the first in the career of Erne.
After the halftime break, Lucas Ordosgoitia (Cartagena, Colombia) extended the Beacons lead to three when he flicked a perfectly placed corner kick from Pizzetti to the far post upper corner. The goal was the second of the year for the junior defender. The final goal of the match, which belonged to Pizzetti, came on a low hard cross into the Massachusetts Maritime goal box from Miguel Alcantar (San Diego, Calif.) just moments after he entered the match.
On top of leading the match in shots, the Beacons also held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
For the Buccaneers Cohen made a combined six stops, while Rob Robbs registered two of his team's four shots on goal.
Men's Soccer returns to action on Saturday when they host Plymouth State University at 1 p.m. in a huge Little East Conference match. Prior to the start of the match, the Beacons will honor their two senior members.
