GALOUZIS LIFTS MEN'S SOCCER OVER SUFFOLK IN SEASON OPENER, 1-0
Sept. 8, 2010
BOSTON, MA - Freshman midfielder Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, MA) netted his first collegiate goal to propel the University of Massachusetts men's soccer team over Suffolk University, 1-0, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center field on the campus of UMass Boston. With the win, the Beacons improve to 1-0 on the season while the loss drops the Rams to 1-1 overall.
Following a Suffolk foul close to midfield, sophomore defender Wesley Trevino (Boulder, CO) played the ensuing free-kick into the Rams 18-yard box. The Rams were unable to cleanly clear the ball which landed at the foot of Galouzis who was able to net the game's only goal on a chip-in over senior goalkeeper Jack DeJesus (Boston, MA) to put UMass Boston on top, 1-0, with 33:58 remaining in the second stanza.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) made the goal stand up, stopping all three shots fired on-frame to register his first collegiate shutout. This was the Beacons first shutout victory over Suffolk since the 2005 season and first shutout to open a campaign since 2007.
The two teams played a very physical match, each with opportunities early on. UMass Boston's best chance in the first half came on a shot fired by sophomore midfielder Victor Costa (Malden, MA) with 5:29 to play that had DeJesus beat but ricocheted off the crossbar. The Rams had two semi-break away opportunities in the first stanza on runs by freshman forward Derek Graham (Springfield, VT) and junior midfielder Nick Cugine (Ridgefield, CT) but Dowd was able to make the save on both attempts.
DeJesus finished the game with two saves for the Rams.
The Beacons are back in action on Saturday, September 11 when they travel to Babson Park, MA to face Babson College for a 1:00 p.m. match. Suffolk University will host Emmanuel College the same day in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
