Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Sophomore forward Mike Zazzara (Dedham, MA) netted a pair of goals and added an assist, while senior keeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) stopped all eight shots he faced to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Eastern Nazarene College today at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 1-1-0 on the season, while the Lions fall to 0-4-0.

Zazzara gave UMass Boston a 3-0 lead at the 63:02 mark of the second half when freshman midfielder Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam) sent a cross into the box that Zazzara finished with a header into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Zazzara didn't waste any time getting his second tally of the year when Johnson hooked up with him again on a throw in that Zazzara trapped and turned with a shot that made it 4-0 at 64:44.

Junior Alex Cavallero (Lenox, MA) put the Beacons on the board with his first goal of the season, following a scoreless first half. The midfielder took a cross from freshman forward Luis Saquich (Marlborough, MA) and lofted a shot from 30 yards out that sailed over the Eastern Nazarene keeper and into the back of the net, just 3:29 into the second half to give UMass Boston a 1-0 edge. The Beacons struck again with a score, just over three minutes later, when Zazzara found forward Jaime Delgado (Cali, Colombia/Everglades (FL) H.S.) in the near midfield for a shot off the keeper's hands that crossed the goal line for his first collegiate tally at 51:53. Delgado had just entered the match at the start of the second half, after missing nearly all of pre-season and the team's first match with an injury, and had to leave the contest after just nine minutes of action.

The Lions took 17 shots in the match, including eight on net that Persuitte turned away for his third collegiate shutout and first win of the year for UMass Boston. Sophomore goalie Chris Cherry (Brockton, MA) made 10 saves for Eastern Nazarene as UMB fired 25 shots on the day.

The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, September 12 when they travel to Babson Park, MA to take on Babson College at 2:00 p.m., while the Lions go to Biddeford, ME on September 12 to play University of New England at 2:30 p.m.
