BOSTON, MA - Junior midfielder Alex Cavallero (Lenox, MA) scored with less than 12 minutes left in regulation to pull the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team even at 1-1 with visiting Fitchburg State College, where the score would stay through two overtimes for a tie this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons are now 1-2-1 on the season, while the Falcons stand at 1-3-1.
Fitchburg State got on the board first with less than five minutes left in the first half when senior midfielder Jeffrey Loven (Littleton, MA) sent a thru ball cross to the left side that junior forward Lionso Ventura (Westminster, MA) finished with a shot into the back of the net of the far post at the 40:28 mark for a 1-0 edge.
Cavallero's game-tying score came when freshman midfielder Reyn Johnson's (Mangilao, Guam) throw-in took some fortuitous bounces into the box and eluded the Falcons' defense before finding Cavallero for a shot into the back post of the net at 78:32.
Both teams were unable to score in either 10-minute overtime period. UMass Boston held a 3-1 shot advantage in the first overtime, while Fitchburg State owned a 2-1 edge in the second extra frame.
Freshman keeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) stopped seven shots in his collegiate debut for the Beacons, while senior Matt Carey (Stratford, CT) turned away 10 shots for the Falcons. UMass Boston owned a 27-13 shot advantage in the match.
The Beacons will be in action again on Saturday, September 19 when they host Little East Conference foe University of Southern Maine at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center Field, while Fitchburg State travels to Worcester, MA for a match with Worcester State on September 19 at 11:00 a.m.
