Salem, MA - Raphael Santos (Brazil/Boston Latin High) scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Salem State College men's soccer team past University of Massachusetts Boston, 3-1, tonight in Salem, MA on the campus of Salem State College. The Beacons fall to 2-3-1 on the season, while the Vikings improve to 3-2-0.
Santos, who netted his third goal of the season, scored on a feed from Andrew Angus (Boston, MA) to give Salem State a 2-0 first half lead. Earlier, Santos assisted Angus with a cross that gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game.
Sophomore forward Mike Zazzara (Dedham, MA) nearly tied the score at 31:07 for UMass Boston when he broke free, but was stoned by Vikings' goalie, Scott Hall (Waltham, MA) to keep the score at 1-0.
The Beacons cut the deficit to one goal when freshman midfielder Victor Costa (Malden, MA) put a shot away for his first collegiate goal with just over ten minutes remaining in the contest. However, Owen Quane (Weymouth, MA) iced the game for Salem State when he answered three minutes later on a cross from Santos to make the final, 3-1.
Hall made six saves to earn the win for the Vikings, while senior keeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) stopped four shots for UMass Boston.
Salem State will next travel to Fitchburg State on Saturday, September 26 for a 3:30 PM contest, while the Beacons head to North Dartmouth, MA on September 26 for a 1:00 p.m. match with Little East Conference foe UMass Dartmouth.
