BOSTON, MA - Senior defender Henry Marin (Pereira, Colombia/Haverhill (MA) H.S.) converted a penalty kick and junior keeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) stopped a penalty kick to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over visiting Becker College today on a rain-soaked field at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons improve to 3-6-0 on the season, while the Hawks fall to 4-4-1.
Senior forward Rich Stone (Quincy, MA) was taken down in the box to warrant the penalty kick for Marin at 20:54 of the first half. Marin's shot found the back of the right side of the net for UMass Boston to make it 1-0.
Senior forward Dircilino DeBrito (New Bedford, MA) took the penalty kick for Becker and sent a shot ticketed for the right corner of the net at 74:22 of the second half, but Persuitte laid out and just got his fingertips on the ball to deflect it away from the net to preserve the shutout, which was his second of the season.
The Beacons had two other chances to score in the final 15 minutes when junior forward Tola Familoni (East Greenwich, RI) sent a shot into an open net in the 77th minute, but a Hawks' defender blocked the attempt. Freshman forward Jaime Delgado (Cali, Colombia/Everglades (FL) H.S.) also caught the Becker keeper out of the net and took a shot with less than eight minutes left to play, but again the Hawks defense came up big with a blocked shot.
Persuitte finished the match with seven saves for UMB, while junior goalie Aaron Fill (Ladner, BC) stopped five shots for Becker.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, October 4 when it hosts University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in a Little East Conference match at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Hawks host Rivier College at 6:00 p.m. on October 4.
