CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Junior midfielder Alex Cavallero (Lenox, MA) netted a goal and added an assist to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team over host Newbury College, 4-0, this afternoon in a match that was played at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA. The Beacons improve to 4-4-1 with their second straight victory, while the Nighthawks fall to 1-10-0.
The Beacons have not allowed a goal in their last 189:23 of play.
UMasss Boston jumped on the board midway through the first period when Cavallero found the back of the net for his third marker of the season and second game-winner at 22:32 of the first half. The Beacons took a 2-0 lead just over four minutes later when sophomore midfielder Igor DaCruz (Cambridge, MA) converted a header for his first tally of the year on a cross from sophomore forward Mike Zazzara (Dedham, MA) at 26:40.
In the second half, UMass Boston put two more goals on the board. Freshman forward Luis Saquich (Marlborough, MA) scored his third goal of the campaign on a cross from Cavallero, just over 15 minutes into the period at 61:04. Just 34 seconds later, freshman midfielder Karim Boubess (Beirut, Lebanon) found Zazzara for his team-leading fifth goal of the season to give the Beacons a 4-0 advantage.
Senior UMass Boston keeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) was untested in the contest as the Beacons held a 30-1 shot advantage. Sophomore goalie William McNally (Grafton, MA) recorded 14 saves for Newbury.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, October 10 when it travels to Danbury, CT to take on Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University at 12:00 p.m., while the Nighthawks return to the pitch on October 10 with a road match in Boston at Wheelock College at 12:00 p.m.
