BOSTON, MA - Senior midfielder Romeo Zeqo (Volos, Greece/Medford (MA) HS) tallied a career-high nine points, including four goals to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team to an 8-3 victory over visiting Newbury College today at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons goal total was their highest since an 11-1 win over Framingham State College on October 14, 1989. UMB improves to 4-7-0 on the season, while the Nighthawks fall to 3-11-0.
The four goals and nine points move Zeqo past Carlos Fernandes (1993-96) and into third place at UMB for career goals (31) and points (77).
Zeqo netted four straight Beacons' goals in the second half, sandwiched around Newbury senior forward John Mawson's (Amherst, MA) second goal of the afternoon at 58:14 of the second half to cut the deficit to 6-2. Zeqo's first two goals in the string came at 55:53 and 52 seconds later at 56:45 to give UMB a 6-1 advantage. His second pair of goals came at 64:36 of the second half and exactly one minute later at 65:36 for an 8-2 UMass Boston lead and his seventh goal of the campaign. Zeqo's only assist of the contest came when he took a cross from senior defender Henry Marin (Pereira, Colombia/Haverhill (MA) HS) and left it for senior forward Rich Stone (Quincy, MA) to finish for his second goal of the year and a 2-0 margin at the 12:36 mark of the match.
The Beacons got on the board when junior midfielder Matthew Parentele (Holyoke, MA) registered his first of three assists on the afternoon with a cross on a corner kick into the box where junior midfielder Collins Dibia (Emne, Nigeria/Medford (MA) HS) found the right corner of the back of the net for his second goal of the season, just 6:20 into the match, for a 1-0 edge. Mawson pulled the Nighthawks to within 2-1 when senior forward William Maddock (Marshfield, MA) sent a through ball to Mawson's left foot, where he finished in the far right post for the first of two assists for Maddock at 34:33 of the match. UMass Boston snuck a goal in before the half when junior forward Tola Familoni (East Greenwich, RI) crossed to junior forward Mourad Chibane (Malden, MA) for a shot that found the high center of the net for his second goal of the year and a 3-1 Beacons' lead with just 44 seconds left in the half.
Sophomore defender Alex Cavallero (Lenox, MA) wasted no time in adding to the UMass Boston lead with his first goal of the year coming when he dribbled through the midfield and notched a low finish to the right corner just 3:29 into the second session for a 4-1 advantage. Mawson later capped the scoring with his third goal of the day for Newbury coming on a through ball from sophomore midfielder Joseph Lawer (Worcester, MA) at 66:15 of the second half.
UMB owned a 35-14 shot advantage as junior keeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) earned the victory for the Beacons with three saves, while freshman goalie William McNally (Grafton, MA) stopped 12 shots for the Nighthawks.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, October 11 when it travels to Willimantic, CT to take on Little East Conference rival Eastern Connecticut State University at 1:00 p.m., while Newbury hosts Elms College on October 11 at 3:00 p.m.
