BOSTON, MA - Junior midfielder Brunno Goncalves (Framingham, MA) scored just 2:32 into the match and junior goalkeeper Greg Halle (Beverly, MA) made 14 saves to lead the Framingham State College men's soccer team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 1-0, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons fall to 4-6-1 on the season, while the Rams improve to 5-7-0.
Goncalves dribbled through three defenders into the box and finished with a shot into the right side of the back of the net to give Framingham State a 1-0 edge for the only offense of the afternoon.
Both teams uncorked nine shots in the first half, but UMass Boston dominated the shots in the second stanza with a 13-3 advantage.
The Beacons put the pressure on with 19 minutes left in the half when freshman midfielder Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam) fired a shot into the right corner that was turned away by the Rams' keeper, before sophomore forward Mike Zazzara (Dedham, MA) put the rebound on net, only to be stoned again. UMass Boston had another chance six minutes later when Johnson sent a header in front of the left corner of the net, where freshman midfielder Wesley Trevino (Boulder, CO) blasted a shot that went wide.
Senior goalie Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA) stopped five shots on the day for the Beacons.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, October 17 when it hosts Little East Conference foe Keene State College at 1:00 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center Field, while Framingham State hosts Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 11:00 p.m. on October 17.
