PLYMOUTH, NH - Senior Semir Mehmedovic (Concord, NH) scored two goals Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston in the Little East Conference regular season finale at Panther Field.
The Panthers complete the regular season at 6-8-3 overall and 2-2-3 in conference play, and lock up a spot in next week's LEC Tournament. PSU will play a first-round game on Monday, with the opponent and site of the game to be determined after all of Saturday's LEC games are completed. The Beacons finish their season at 4-12-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the Little East.
UMB nearly got on the board first, but a shot by senior Romeo Zeqo (Medford, MA) just three minutes into the match bounced hard off the cross bar. Mehmedovic tallied the only goal of the first half for PSU with seven minutes remaining when he was sent in alone down the left side and chipped the ball past a charging Beacon keeper Domenick Persuitte (West Barnstable, MA)
The visitors evened the match 15 minutes into the second half on a corner kick, as PSU senior keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, NH) deflected the ball but sophomore Alex Cavallero (Lenox, MA) headed the rebound into the far corner. Zeqo was credited with the assist, which was the 83rd and last point of his career to place him third on the UMB career list. It didn't stay tied long, as Mehmedovic was pulled down in the box three minutes later and converted the penalty kick for his second goal of the game and team-leading eighth of the season.
The Beacons had several chances to tie the game again, but Shute made outstanding saves on freshman Jaime Delgado (Pembroke Pines, FL) in the 71st minute and junior Matt Parentele (Holyoke, MA) in the 77th minute. UMB's best chance to tie it came with nine minutes remaining, but a penalty kick by senior Henry Marin (Haverhill, MA) sailed high and wide.
Sophomore Stefan Welch (Tokyo, Japan) added an insurance goal for PSU in the final minute when he knocked in the rebound after freshman Dre Cabral (Tokyo, Japan) hit the right post.
Plymouth owned a 19-8 shot advantage as senior keeper Tyler Shute (Deerfield, NH) was forced to only make three saves in the Panthers win. Persuitte stopped six shots for the Beacons.
Zeqo ends his career as the number three goal-scorer of all-time for UMass Boston with 34 and stands sixth with 15 assists. Marin's final match leaves him in 10th place on the UMB career points list with 45 and seventh with 20 goals.
