Men's Soccer Wins Third Straight; Shuts Out Newbury 4-0
Oct. 5, 2011
WESTON, Mass. – With a pair of goals from junior Brian Sanz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) men’s soccer (7-3) continued their winning ways as they shutout Newbury College (1-6) by the final score of 4-0, Wednesday evening at the Regis College Athletic Field.
The Beacons got on the scoreboard late in the first half, when Sanz was able to collect his own rebound after a hard shot, which he then drove into the back of the net. Five minute later Reyn Johnson (Mangilao, Guam) got in on the action as he made it a 2-0 match, after redirecting a pass from Stefanos Galouzis (Watertown, MA).
In the second half, Sanz once again sparked the Beacons offense, this time finding the back of the net in the 58th minute, with some help from Danny Housley (Plympton, MA). Dan Purchia (Winchester, MA) closed out the match with its final goal in the 75th minute on an unassisted play.
UMass, who has been playing some extremely well as of late, dominated play from start to finish Wednesday night. The offense, which has registered nine goals in the last three matches, tallied 40 shots in the match, with 18 of those finding their way on goal.
The win also marked the third straight shutout for goalkeeper Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) and the Beacons defense. Dowd totaled just two saves in the match, while his back-four held Newbury to just six shots all night.
Men’s soccer also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, and forced Newbury goalkeeper William McNally to make a combined 14 saves.
Men’s soccer returns to action on Saturday when they travel to UMass Dartmouth for a 1 p.m. Little East Conference match.
