DARTMOUTH, Mass. – With a goal in the 71st minute from Brady Paradis, the Corsairs of UMass Dartmouth (7-3-1, 2-1-1 LEC) managed to get past men’s soccer (7-4, 1-3 LEC) by the final score of 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field in a Little East Conference match-up.
Paradis’ goal, his first of the year, was assisted by Elton Borges, who actually netted the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute of the first half.
Saturday’s match was as even as they come as both teams showcased a variety of opportunities as well as strong defensive play by both team’s goalkeepers. The Beacons held a 17-14 advantage in the shot column, but it was the Corsairs who had the edge in shots on goal with a +2 rating (10-8). UMass also held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Netting the Beacons lone score of the day was Dan Purchia (Winchester, MA), his third of the year. Brian Sanz assisted the play, to close out the week with a pair of goals and the one helper. Sanz went on to lead the team in shots with four, with one finding its way on goal.
In goal, Brycen Dowd (Mansfield, MA) totaled eight saves, including some huge stops to keep the game close. Mike Phelan notched seven saves to earn his fifth win of the season.
Men’s soccer returns to action on Wednesday when they host Emerson College at 3:30 p.m.
