Western Connecticut State Downs Tennis

DANBURY, Conn.-- UMass Boston (8-5, 3-2) got off to a slow start in doubles play and couldn't overcome host Western Connecticut State University (5-3, 2-2) in a Little East Conference matchup, as the Colonials held off the Beacons 6-3 at the Westside Courts.

The Beacons won all three of their wins in singles play, as David Hernandez (Bogota, Colombia), Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) and Seth Shavers (Boston, Mass.) each won their matches.

Hernandez handed previously unbeaten Troy Pandolfi his first loss of the season in number one singles with a 7-6, 1-6, 10-8 victory. Pandolfi had previously been 6-0 this season but couldn't keep it going against Hernandez, who moved to 8-4 in singles play.

Lai dropped the first set but stormed back to win his number three singles match against Brian Bucknam with a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 margin.

But it was Shavers who played by far the most dramatic and thrilling match of the day at number four singles. He defeated Ryan Klem by a 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 12-10 score.

While the Beacons managed to split singles play, they dropped the match because they couldn't overcome the Colonials in doubles action. Hernandez and Lai fell just short in their number one doubles match against Pandolfi and Austin Werner losing by a 9-8 (7-5) score.

The Beacons will have a quick turnaround, as they will play Johnson & Wales University (R.I.) Monday at 3 p.m.
