BOSTON, Mass. –Samantha Counts (Bridgewater, Mass.) from women's tennis and Lyle Analetto (Belmont, Mass.) and Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) from men's tennis have been named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (4.0 scale) or better during the 2011-12 academic year.
The honor marked the first in the career of all three players, who shined both on the court and in the classroom in their sophomore years. Each player managed a very challenging and demanding athletic schedule, while also maintaining some of the highest grade point averages in the entire UMass Boston athletic department.
This past season both the women's and men's squad some tremendous success on an individual and team level. Counts helped the Beacons make a return to the Little East Conference tournament after a two-year hiatus. Lai and Analetto not only helped UMass return to the postseason, but they also played a crucial part in helping the Beacons to one of their best overall finishes in program history.
