PORTLAND, Maine—Little East Conference play couldn't have come at a better time for men's tennis, as the Beacons (3-3) snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday with a commanding 7-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine (2-3) at the Portland Raquet Club.
After dropping three of four matches in Florida, UMass Boston picked up their biggest win of the spring season, behind five singles victories.
The Beacons top four of Sean Cullen (Medway, Mass.), David Hernandez (Bogota, Columbia), Alex Loyer (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) all went undefeated in the match, helping UMB snap the Huskies' two-game winning-streak.
Cullen, playing in his first match since the fall, earned a 6-4, 6-1 victory at number one singles and teamed up with Hernandez to grab an 8-5 victory at number one doubles. Hernandez had little trouble knocking off Thaddeus St. John at number two singles, registering a 6-3, 6-4 win.
Loyer and Lai were even more dominant than the Beacons top pair, winning 8-5 at number two doubles and losing a combined four games between number three and number four singles.
Eglis Bizhoti (Dorchester, Mass.) picked up the final win of the day for UMB, with a 6-4, 7-6 victory at number six singles.
UMass Boston will host Suffolk University Thursday at 3:00 p.m., in a match that will be played at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts.
