Middlebury, Vt.—Seniors Charles Lai (Boston, Mass.) and Sean Cullen (Medway, Mass.) represented UMass Boston men's tennis Friday afternoon at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championship at Middlebury College.
The Beacons senior pair, each competing in the tournament for a second consecutive season, kicked off the defending Little East Conference Champions season, that was capped off with a trip to the NCAA Tournament last May.
In doubles, the pair dropped a tough 8-4 match to Colby Sawyer College's duo of Nathan Tascherau and Myles Utell. The Beacons and Chargers will face off in a dual match Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in New London, New Hampshire.
Lai and Cullen also participated in singles action, with both players failing to overcome their talented opponents.
Lai dropped a 6-1, 6-0 decision to MIT's Edwin Zhang, the third-ranked player in the 64-player bracket.
Cullen didn't fare much better, dropping a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Bowdoin College's Eric Chien.
