EAST PROVIDENCE, RI - The University of Massachusetts Boston men's tennis team was defeated at Johnson & Wales University, 7-2, today in East Providence, RI. The Beacons, who were missing four of their regular players, fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-4.
Senior Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, MA) was a double winner for UMass Boston, winning at number one singles over Henrick Arnbert (Sweden), 6-2, 6-2 and combining with freshman Dara Chhan (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) to come out on top at first doubles over Arnbert and Colin Black, 8-6.
Senior Ali Al-Sabbagh (West Roxbury, MA) was beaten at second singles by Dennis Russell for Johnson & Wales, 6-2, 6-2, while Chhan fell at third singles to Black, 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Thong Leng (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) was defeated at number four singles by the Wildcats' Gino Richter, 6-1, 6-1 and the Beacons' Himanshu Dubey (Lucknow, India) took the first set at fifth singles, 6-4, before succumbing to Devin Kitterick (Bridgewater, MA) in the final two sets, 6-3, 10-6. James Adriano took sixth singles for Johnson & Wales over freshman Colin Riddle (Sturbridge, MA), 6-2, 6-2.
Kitterick and Russell combined to down Al-Sabbagh and Riddle at number two doubles, 8-5, while Richter and Adriano teamed up to defeat Dubey and Leng at third doubles, 8-2.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, April 18 when it hosts Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College at 1:00 p.m. at the Boston College High School courts, while the Wildcats host Emerson College on April 18 at 1:30 p.m.
