Track and Field Competes at Corsairs Invitational
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Highlighted by a program record throw by Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, Mass.) and two first place finishes by Samara Faustin (Boston, Mass.) the UMass Boston track and field teams had another solid Saturday as the women's team placed fifth overall, while the men's team recorded a seventh place finish at the 2013 UMass Dartmouth Corsairs Invitational.
Kloczewiak broke the program record in the hammer throw for the second straight week, this time recording a toss of 113-08 feet, breaking her original record distance by four more feet. For Faustin her afternoon consisted of a new personal best in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.45 seconds. She would also earn the top time in the 200 meter dash as she crossed the finish line in 25.67 seconds.
On the men's side, senior Jake Kerin (Quincy, Mass.) led the Beacons with a third place finish in the 800 meter run with his time of 1:59.71. Newcomer Tucker Gaye (Boston, Mass.) also walked away with a top-3 finish as he took third in the long jump with a final leap of 19-07.00 feet.
Back in the women's 100 meter dash, freshman Hulerie McGuffie (Lynn, Mass.) recorded a new career best time (12.73) to earn a third place finish. Renee O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.) and Anisha Trappier (Taunton, Mass.) were also amongst the top-5 finishers in the 100 to earn UMB a combined 25 points towards their team score.
McGuffie notched a second place finish in the 200 with a time of 25.93 seconds, followed by O'Brien who took seventh in the event with a time of 26.79 seconds. In the 400 meter dash Ari Leao (New Bedford, Mass.) notched a sixth place time as the lone competitor for UMB (1:04.05).
The high jump saw a new personal best recorded by O'Brien as the freshman recorded a height of 4-09.00 feet. McGuffie would continue her amazing day as she finished second in the long jump with a leap of 15-07.50 feet. The throwing events saw Katelyn Sheehan (Norwell, Mass.) lead the way in the shot put with her throw of 29-10.00 feet. She would also earn the top distance in the discus throw (93-09) as well. Nicole Aube (Westfield, Mass.) and Brittany Moore (Billerica, Mass.) both recorded new personal bests in the discus with throws of 85-05 and 80-11 feet respectively. After Kloczewiak's record setting throw Aube nabbed a seventh place finish in the hammer with a toss of 107-02 feet.
Tiara Butler-Smith (Hyde Park, Mass.) capped off the afternoon with a new personal best in the javelin with her throw of 67-08 feet.
For the men's team, Norbert Simon (Chelsea, Mass.) got the afternoon off to a great start with his new personal best in the 100 meter dash to earn ninth place in the event (11.62). In the 200 meter dash a slew of Beacons competed in the event, with senior Henry Morales (Chelsea, Mass.) and Simon leading the way with seventh (23.50) and eighth (23.70) place finishes respectively. After Morales and Simon a combined five Beacons sprinters recorded new personal bests.
In the 400 Simon, once again led the group with his time of 53.85 seconds to earn 15th place overall. Senior Hamza Abdul (Chelsea, Mass.) was the next Beacon to cross the finish line with his time of 55.23, followed by Chris Chapman (Brockton, Mass.) who recorded a time of 55.48.
The 110 meter hurdles was led by Morales' time of 16.29 seconds, while Matt Nardiello (Swampscott, Mass.) led the way in the 400 meter hurdles with his time of 1:00.13, which earned him fifth place. Morales took fourth in the 110 to lead the Beacons in the event.
The 4x100 meter relay team notched a fourth place finish with their combined time of 45.00 seconds. In the 4x400 meter relay the two Beacons teams earned a seventh ninth place finish respectively.
High jumper Tylor Hart (Newton, Mass.) posted a fourth place finish with his jump of 6-00.00 feet. Morales recorded a fourth place finish in the long jump with a distance of 19-06.75 feet. Julian Hubbard (Windsor, Maine) finished in fourth place with his leap of 40-06.00 feet in the long jump.
In the shot put Jabari Woods (Randolph, Mass.), Tony Nguyen (Boston, Mass.), and Mike Perkins (Saugus, Mass.) each recorded new personal bests with their throws of 35-05.75, 34-06.25, and 25-09.50 feet respectively. Woods would then lead the in the discus with his throw of 87-09, while in the hammer the freshman recorded a new personal best with a toss of 120-02 feet to finish in ninth place.
Track and Field returns to action on Saturday when they take part in the Tufts University Multi-Event meet which is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
