Rutgers-Newark Defeats Women's Basketball in Non-Conference Action
NEWARK, N.J. – Led by three double-figure scorers Rutgers-Newark (9-3) defeated women's basketball (2-8) by the final score of 51-37 Tuesday afternoon at The Golden Dome Arena.
Carrying the Scarlet Raiders to the non-conference win was Kendra Johnson who scored a game-high 17 points while adding a team-high nine rebounds plus five steals and three assists. ShaQuanna Marshall added 16 points, four rebounds, three steals and an assist as the Scarlet Raiders forced 31 turnovers against the Beacons.
In a game in which neither team shot 30% from the floor, sophomore forward Jasmine Daniels up with five the Raiders' 19 steals while senior forward Lori Nieves chipped in a dozen points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Freshman center Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) notched a double-double for UMass Boston with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with a pair of blocked shots and two steals. Junior guard Elisa Ogawa (Yamanashi, Japan) added seven points, eight rebounds and a team-high four assists while freshman forward Brittany Moore came off the bench for six points and seven rebounds.
Marshall, who netted 10 points in the first half, had six during an opening 10-0 run by the Raiders as UMass Boston did not score from the field until Ogawa nailed a trey with 10:57 left in the half to make it 14-5. Rutgers-Newark led by as many as 15 points during the opening 20 minutes before settling for a 27-16 lead at the half.
Johnson netted a dozen points in the second half as the Raiders never let the Beacons get closer than 10 points before pulling away to lead by as many as 18 points. Morrison kept the Beacons within striking distance with 13 points in the final period.
Women's Basketball returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Merchant Marine Academy for a 5:30 p.m. non-conference game.
