NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – UMass Boston basketball dominated the Little East Conference weekly awards as both teams earned wins last week to close out their 2012 home schedule. For the second time this season freshmen Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) and Jahleel Moise (Brockton, Mass.) were named Rookies of the Week, while sophomore Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) earned her first LEC Player of the Week selection.
Moise played a major part in leading the Beacons to a huge non-conference win over Framingham State University last Thursday. The freshman forward dropped in eight points and collected eight boards all in the second half. His huge dunk in the opening minutes of the second half, sparked the Beacons offense, which outscored the Rams 43-19 in the final 20 minutes of Thursday's contest.
On the women's side Morrison recorded 20 points and 11 rebounds in the Beacons 55-51 win over Westfield State University on Tuesday. The victory, which ended a 13-game skid for the Beacons, saw the 6'2" center shoot 62.5% from the field (10-for-16). The double-figure finish marked the seventh time that the reigning Little East Conference and D3Hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year has reached the mark. Of her 11 boards, five were recorded on the offensive side of the court.
For Murphy, her second Rookie of the Week selection came as a result of her five points and 13 boards during last Tuesday's victory over Westfield State University. The freshman was dominant on the glass pulling down seven defensive boards. She also totaled three steals and one block in the non-conference victory.
