PAWTUCKET, R.I.—For the sixth time this season, UMass Boston women's basketball freshman Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
Grassi ties assistant coach Kirsten Morrison ('15) for the second-most LEC Rookie of the Week honors in a single-season. The two forwards trail only All-American Olivia Murphy ('16), who was named LEC Rookie of the Week seven times during the 2013 season.
Grassi averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game during a 2-0 week against LEC foes. She also shot 54 percent (13-24) from the field and knocked down 9-11 (82 percent) of her free throws on the week.
On Wednesday, Grassi poured in a team-high 24 points and added eight rebounds in a historic 71-68 road win over the University of Southern Maine. The win gave the Beacons' a regular-season sweep over the Huskies for the first time in school history.
She tacked on 12 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals in the Beacons' 92-60 win over Western Connecticut State University on Saturday. UMass Boston locked up their most-ever wins in LEC history with the 2-0 week (12-2) and also their highest-ever finish (second).
Grassi enters the posteason in the top-10 of the Little East in points (15.6-7th), rebounds (7.1-7th) and blocks per game (1.3-t-1st). She also leads the conference in 3-point field goal percentage (42.6), ranks fifth in field goal percentage (48.9) and ninth in free throw percentage (70.2).
#2 UMass Boston will open LEC Tournament play on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m., when they host #7 Plymouth State University.
