BOSTON, Mass.—UMass Boston women's basketball freshman Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) was named the D3Hoops.com Northeast Region Co-Rookie of the Year, the website announced Tuesday morning.
The Beacons' leading scorer and rebounder finished in a tie for Rookie of the Year with University of Southern Maine freshman Kristen Curley.
Grassi was also named to the D3Hoops.com Northeast Region Fourth Team, after leading the Beacons' to their best ever season. She joins assistant coach Kirsten Morrison ('15) and Olivia Murphy ('16) as the only Beacons to be named D3Hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year. Grassi is the first freshman to have also earned a spot on an All-Region Team.
As a freshman, Grassi led UMass Boston in scoring (15.7 ppg), rebounding (7.3 rbg) and blocks (1.34 bpg) per game. She tied for the Little East Conference lead in blocks per game and finished in the top-10 in scoring (seventh), rebounding (sixth), field goal percentage (48.5-fifth), 3-point field goal percentage (41.3-second) and free throw percentage (71.1-seventh).
Grassi was named the LEC Tournament Most Outstanding Player after recording 26 points and nine rebounds in an upset of top-seeded UMass Dartmouth in the LEC Championship Game. In three LEC Tournament games, Grassi averaged 17.6 points and 7.6 rebounds in 31 minutes per game.
During the course of the season, Grassi was recognized as the LEC Rookie of the Week a program-record tying seven times.
She posted a team-best six double-doubles in 29 starts and recorded at least eight points in every game this season. Grassi put together her best game of the season on December 30, when she went off for a career-high 29 points on 10-17 shooting in a comeback win over NCAA Tournament team MIT.
