Box Score

BOSTON, MA - Four players scored in double figures for Eastern Connecticut State University led by 12 points from senior forward Amanda Pierlioni (Plainville, CT) and senior guard Brittany Whiteley (Windsor Locks, CT) en route to a dominant 68-34 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. With the decision, the Beacons fall to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in the Little East Conference, while the Warriors improve to 9-3 and 3-0 in the LEC.

A slow start plagued both teams as UMass Boston was 1-for-9 from the field and Eastern Connecticut turned over the ball seven times in the first 5:33. The Warriors finally came together and tallied an 8-0 run that was capped with a layup by junior forward Piper Chapman (Portsmouth, RI) to make the score 11-2 at the 11:31 mark. After the squads exchanged several buckets, Whiteley ignited a 12-0 run with a 3-pointer at 9:48. Sophomore forward Tanisha Carter (East Hartford, CT) capped the stretch with a layup at 4:31 which gave Eastern Connecticut a 26-7 advantage. Each team managed just a single field goal apiece over the remainder of the half as the whistle blew with the score 28-10. The Beacons never heated up from the floor and finished the first frame shooting just 19 percent and also committed 14 turnovers as a result of constant pressure from the Warriors.

Eastern Connecticut came storming out of the locker room to start the second half and took a commanding 36-10 lead after an 8-0 run in the first 2:06. UMass Boston bounced back to rattle off five consecutive points as a layup by senior forward Cammy Brown (Malden, MA) closed the gap, 36-15. The Warriors, however, put together another 8-0 string to pull away, 44-15, with a short bucket by Pierlioni at 13:40. Freshman forward Kendra Mosley (Indian Head, MD) recorded the next basket to cut the deficit to 17, but that was the closest that the Beacons would come. Eastern Connecticut's advantage swelled to 36 with just over two minutes remaining in the game on a shot by sophomore forward Rachael Armstrong (Fairfield, CT). Again, UMass Boston shot poorly at 21.9 percent in the half and finished the contest with a 20.8 percent mark from the field.

For the Warriors, Chapman and sophomore guard Jessica Blodgett (Niantic, CT) were the other players in double digits with 10 points each. Chapman also hauled in nine rebounds, while senior guard Jessica Moriarty (East Haven, CT) had a team-leading 10 boards and Pierlioni added seven.

Freshman guard Colleen Hooper (Mansfield, MA) led UMass Boston with 14 points and junior forward Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) pulled down eight rebounds.

Both teams return to action Tuesday, January 11 at 5:30 p.m. as the Beacons travel to Plymouth State University and the Warriors host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
