DANBURY, CT - Junior forward Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team over Little East Conference rival University of Massachusetts Boston, 65-28, Saturday afternoon at the O'Neill Center on the campus of Western Connecticut State University.
The Beacons opened the game's scoring when freshman swing player Evyn Gregory-Stewart (Leonia, NJ) drained a 3-point shot from the right wing, but WestConn answered by scoring the next 10 points to take a 10-3 lead at the 14:34 mark. UMass Boston cut the lead to six, 13-7, four minutes later, but the Colonials went on another run to stretch the lead to 21-7, and went into the locker room at intermission leading 25-10.
In the second half, the WestConn defense limited the Beacons to only five points for the first 14 minutes extending the lead to 52-15, and cruised to a 65-28 victory. For the game, the Colonials limited UMass Boston to 20% shooting from the floor, and only 1-of-8 from three-point range.
For the Beacons, freshman guard Laniece Langford (Boston, MA) led the squad with 11 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Gregory-Stewart pulled down seven rebounds and finished with five points in 22 minutes of action. Sophomore forward Cammy Brown (Malden, MA) came off the bench and contributed with six points and four boards.
For WestConn, also scoring in double figures was senior forward Stacey Roberts (Windham, CT) with 13 points. Sophomore center Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, scored seven points, and blocked two shots. With the victory WestConn moves to 10-2 on the season, 3-0 in the Little East Conference, while UMass Boston falls to 2-10, 0-3 in the LEC.
Both teams will be back in LEC action on Tuesday, January 13 when the Beacons travel to Plymouth, NH to take on Plymouth State University at 5:30 p.m. while the Colonials' will travel to Keene State for a 5:30 p.m. game.
