DANBURY, CT (Jan. 15) -- After suffering its first loss in almost two months, the 18th ranked Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team bounced back with a convincing 71-42 victory over Little East Conference rival UMass Boston Saturday afternoon at Feldman Arena.
Senior Karli Spera (Waterford, CT) scored 12 first-half points for WestConn and finished with 17 for the game to go with eight assists. Senior Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) recorded game highs in both points and rebounds with 19 and nine respectively. Junior Stephanie Slonski (Griswold, CT) also hit double figures in scoring with 10 points and led the Colonials with three steals.
Senior Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) hit a pair of threes early to help WestConn run out to a 10-2 lead, prompting a UMass Boston timeout. A 3-pointer by Spera at the 11:04 mark extended the Colonial lead to 14 points, 21-7. Another three by Spera helped WestConn maintain a 14-point lead with four minutes remaining in the half, and Spera closed out the half for the Colonials by sinking two free throws in the closing seconds to finish with 12 points for the half and giving WestConn a 32-18 lead going into the locker room at intermission.
UMass Boston scored in the first minute of the second half, but the WestConn defense allowed the Beacons only five more points over the next 10 minutes to extend the advantage to 47-25. UMass Boston could only narrow the gap to 17 when Dow hit a jumper with just under seven minutes to play, but when sophomore Nicole Eanniello (Danbury, CT) hit a free throw to complete a three-point play, the WestConn lead was 27 points, 62-35, with three minutes remaining. The Colonials cruised through the final three minutes for a 71-42 final margin of victory.
For the game, WestConn had a 37-26 advantage in rebounds and 23-11 edge in assists. The Colonials finished the game shooting 43.9% from the floor and 80.0% from the line, while UMass Boston shot 32.6% and 73.3% respectively.
With the win, WestConn now stands at 13-2 overall and remains unbeaten in the Little East Conference play at 5-0.
UMass Boston falls to 11-4, and 2-3 in the LEC. Both teams return to action on Tuesday, January 18th, when the Colonials travel to play LEC rival Rhode Island College and the Beacons head to UMass Dartmouth. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30pm in both contests.
