WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO WESTERN CONNECICUT STATE, 82-40

BOSTON, MA - Senior forward Katie Moffo (Southington, CT) and junior guard Karli Spera (Waterford, CT) both scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team over host University of Massachusetts Boston,82-40, this afternoon in a Little East Conference game at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. The Colonials win their 11th straight game to improve to 14-2 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Little East Conference, the Beacons fall to 4-10 and 0-5 on the campaign.

UMass Boston opened the game connecting on its first two attempts from the field when freshman guard Kate Levy (Falmouth, MA) drained a jump shot from the right wing and senior guard Caroline Ashe (West Roxbury, MA) connected on a deep jumper to give the Beacons an early 4-2 lead. This would be the last lead of the afternoon for the home squad as the Colonials raced into halftime with a 37-24 advantage.

In the second half, Western Connecticut State stormed out of the gates with an 18-0 run, fueled by six points each from Spera and freshman guard Carly Murphy (Wolcott, CT). With 13:30 left to play in the half, the Beacons finally broke the spurt on a jumper by sophomore forward Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA).

The Colonials were able to hold UMass Boston to a dismal shooting performance of 20.8% (11-53) from the floor on the afternoon, while forcing the home team into 25 turnovers.

For the Beacons, Levy led the squad with 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Rattigan chipped in with a team-high nine rebounds to go along with seven points while Ashe contributed eight points as well as six rebounds.

Murphy finished the game with 10 points and five rebounds for Western Connecticut State, while junior guard Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) also netted double-figures with 13 points to go along with five rebounds. Junior center Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) paced the rebounding effort, grabbing a game-high 15 boards while netting eight points in the win.

Both teams will be back in Little East Conference action on Tuesday, January 19 when UMass Boston hosts University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at 5:30 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Colonials host Rhode Island College in a 5:30 p.m. game in Danbury, CT.
