BIG SECOND HALF FUELS UMASS DARTMOUTH OVER WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, 69-29

BOSTON, MA - Junior guard Lynley DeAmato (Melrose, MA) netted 14 of her game-high 22 points during a second half where the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's basketball team outscored host University of Massachusetts Boston, 49-13, en-route to a 69-29 victory this evening in a Little East Conference game at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. The Corsairs improve to 6-10 overall and 1-5 in LEC play, while the Beacons fall to 4-11 and 0-6.
UMass Dartmouth shot a torrid 65.4% (17-26) from the floor in the second half, while holding UMass Boston to just 23.8% (5-21). The Corsairs' pressure defense was also a problem for the Beacons all night, forcing 34 turnovers and outscoring the home team, 39-7 in points off turnovers.
UMass Dartmouth held a 20-16 lead at halftime, but steamrolled UMass Boston during a 19-2 run to open the second half as part of a 36-4 stretch to take a 56-20 advantage with 7:28 showing in the second half. Sophomore guard Stephanie Houtman (New Bedford, MA) and DeAmato each netted 12 points during the opening blitz for the Corsairs. UMass Dartmouth later took its largest lead of the game following a lay-up from freshman guard Nicole Marotta (Bridgewater, MA) to give the Corsairs a 69-24 lead with 1:56 remaining in the contest.
UMass Dartmouth owned an early 6-4 lead with 12:34 to go in the opening half, before the Beacons went on an 8-1 run capped by a three-pointer from sophomore guard Jaci Goodwin (Melrose, MA) to take a 12-7 lead with 8:27 to play in the first half. The Corsairs responded with eight straight points to take a 15-12 margin with 4:03 left in the half and took a 20-16 lead into the intermission.
DeAmato was 7-14 from the floor, while adding six rebounds, five assists and three steals for UMass Dartmouth. Houtman finished the night with 14 points on 5-10 from the field to go with three assists and a pair of steals, while junior guard Tashauna Ashmeade (Hyannis, MA) contributed with 11 points, two rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Senior forward Kaylin Nelson (New Bedford, MA) chipped in with a game-high 10 rebounds in addition to three points, three steals, two assists and a block.
Freshman guard Kate Levy (Falmouth, MA) led UMass Boston with seven points and added five rebounds, an assist and a block, while sophomore forward Molly Piette (Webster, MA) dropped in six points, grabbed four boards and handed out an assist.
The Beacons will be in action again on Thursday, January 21 when they host Emerson College at 5:30 p.m. at the Clark Athletic Center, while the Corsairs host Plymouth State University on January 23 at 1:00 p.m.
