BOSTON, MA -Keene State College used a 19-0 run early in the second half of play to put away the University of Massachusetts Boston women' basketball team, 52-25, this afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of UMass Boston. With the decision, the Owls improve their record to 8-9 overall and 2-5 in the Little East Conference, while the Beacons fall to 11-6 and 2-5 in conference.
Following a tight first half of play that saw a halftime score of 21-15, KSC outscored UMass Boston 21-3 over the first 15 minutes of action to seal their second Little East Conference victory of the season. Fueling the run were junior guard Emily Laudano (North Haven, CT) with nine points on a trio of buckets from behind the arc and junior forward Courtney Cirillo (Windsor Locks, CT) who had five points during the spurt. The Beacons were able to snap the 19-0 scoreless drought when freshman guard Senteria Renwicks (Baltimore, MD) converted an old fashion three point play with 4:42 remaining in the half to make it a 42-21 Keene State College lead. Over the final four minutes of action, the Owls outscored the home squad by a 10-4 margin to seal the 52-25 road victory. The win avenges a 57-55 overtime win by the Beacons earlier this season up in Keene, NH.
In the first half of play both squads struggled from the floor with the Beacons shooting only 20.0% (6-30) and the Owls connecting on 28.6% (8-28) of their shots. A three pointer by sophomore forward Elizabeth Dow (Marshfield, MA) gave UMass Boston a 15-12 lead with 7:34 to play in the frame but Keene responded with a 9-0 run to close the half and the visitors never looked back.
Cirillo led the way for the Owls, matching her season-high with 17 rebounds to go along with 11 points for a double-double. Laudano finished with a game-high 13 points on 5-for-16 shooting from the floor.
The Beacons are back in action Tuesday, January 25 when they host the University of Southern Maine at 5:30 p.m. for another LEC match-up while the Owls host Plymouth State University the same night for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
