BOSTON, MA - The freshmen guard duo of Kendra Mosley (Indian Head, MD) and Colleen Hooper (Mansfield, MA) combined to score 49 points to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team over visiting Plymouth State University, 69-64, this afternoon in a Little East Conference game at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. The Beacons win their second straight game to improve to 13-10 overall and 3-9 in LEC play, while the Panthers fall to 8-14 and 1-11.
Sophomore forward Colleen O'Hara (Otego, NY) drained a three-pointer to pull Plymouth State even at 46-46 with 9:57 to play in the second half, but UMass Boston went on a 13-4 run, fueled by seven points from sophomore forward Elisa Ogawa (Yamanashi, Japan), to take a 59-50 advantage with 3:52 remaining in the contest. The Panthers answered with a 12-3 run, capped by a layup from junior forward Alicia Doucet (Manchester, NH) to come within 63-62 with 28 ticks left on the clock, but it would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. Plymouth State had a chance to knot the score with 11 seconds left, but junior guard Michaela Galvin (Windham, NH) was unable to connect on all three of her free throws following a three-point attempt that she was fouled on. She made two shots to make the score 65-64, but successful free throws from Mosley and junior forward Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) gave the Beacons the final four points of the afternoon.
The Panthers jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 12:48 showing in the first half, behind a pair of three-pointers from senior forward Amanda Kania (Manchester, NH), but UMass Boston ripped off 11 straight points, paced by eight points from Hooper, to take a 15-14 edge with 10:28 to play in the first stanza. The Beacons later maintained a 22-18 margin following a Hooper trifecta at the 7:24 mark of the first half, but Plymouth State came back with six unanswered points to take a 24-22 lead with 5:07 to go in the half, before taking a 28-26 halftime lead.
Sophomore forward Sam Monohon (Auburn, NH) converted a layup at 14:10 of the second half to give the Panthers a 40-35 advantage, but UMass Boston scored the next five points, capped by a layup at 13:04 from sophomore guard Elizabeth Dow (Marshfield, MA) to make it 40-40 for one of eight ties in the game.
Mosley finished the day with 25 points, including five made three-pointers to give her 52 on the season for the second-most in a campaign in UMB history. She added a game-high five steals in addition to six rebounds and an assist. Hooper was 8-13 from the floor, including 5-7 from three-point range to net 24 points to go with five boards, three assists and a steal off the bench. Ogawa contributed with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and a pair of blocks, while Dow led all players on the glass with 12 rebounds. She also tallied four points, handed out a pair of assists and came up with a steal off the bench.
