BOSTON, MA - Freshman guard/forward Curran Leighton (Dover, NH) poured in a game-high 20 points to lead the University of Southern Maine women's basketball team over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 52-43, this afternoon in a Little East Conference game at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. The Huskies improve to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in LEC play, while the Beacons fall to 4-20 and 0-13.
UMass Boston also promoted breast cancer awareness through the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative by wearing pink laces and shooting shirts as well as raising money through donations and a raffle.
UMB held Southern Maine to just 7.7% (1-13) shooting from three-point range and outscored the Huskies, 29-23 in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the visitors hung on for the victory.
Junior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, ME) converted a fast break lay-up to give Southern Maine a 50-34 lead with 6:14 remaining in the game, but the Beacons went on a 9-0 run to pull to within 50-43 with 2:33 showing in the second half, but it would be as close as they would get in the closing minutes of the contest. The Huskies scored the only two points of the remaining two and a half minutes of play.
Southern Maine steadily built a 27-9 advantage with 3:10 to play in the first half, fueled by nine points from Leighton. UMass Boston later closed the gap to 15 when sophomore forward Molly Rattigan (Dorchester, MA) drained the first three-pointer of her career with 34 ticks remaining in the opening stanza to bring the Beacons to within 29-14, which is where the teams stood at the intermission.
The Huskies later extended their lead to 39-21 following a jumper from senior guard Nicole Paradis (Skowhegan, ME) at the 14:19 mark of the second half, but UMass Boston scored nine of the next 11 points, paced by six from junior forward Cammy Brown (Malden, MA), to cut the deficit to 41-30 with 11:15 left in the game. Southern Maine answered with a 9-4 burst to take a 50-34 bulge.
Leighton was 9-16 from the floor to go with five rebounds and three steals for the Huskies, while senior forward Haley Johnson (West Simsbury, CT) contributed with nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and a steal. Sophomore guard Renee Nicholas (Sebago, ME) was active on the defensive end and finished just short of a double-double with nine points and nine steals in addition to six rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot.
Brown finished with a season-high 12 points on 5-7 from the field to go with five boards in 21 minutes off the bench to lead the Beacons, while freshman guard Bethany Rossoll (Colorado Springs, CO) netted nine points, grabbed three rebounds, made three steals and handed out an assist. Freshman guard Elizabeth Dow (Marshfield, MA) chipped in with six points, seven rebounds and four steals and Rattigan dished for a team-high five assists in addition to three points, six rebounds, two blocks and a steal.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Saturday, February 20 when it travels to Danbury, CT to take on Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University in its season finale at 1:00 p.m., while Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut State University on February 20 at 1:00 p.m.
