BOSTON, MA -- The Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team concluded the regular season with a 63-48 win over Little East Conference rival UMass Boston on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Boston, earning the right to host the semifinal and championship rounds of the upcoming LEC tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 25th and 26th, at Feldman Arena. With the win, WestConn finishes the regular season at 21-3 overall and 13-1 in Little East Conference play, good for first place. As the regular season champs, WestConn earns the right to host the semifinal and championship rounds of the upcoming LEC tournament. Semifinals will be held Friday, Februray 25th, at Feldman Arena, with Saturday's championship game tipping off at 4:00pm. With the loss, UMass Boston closes out the season with an overall record of 13-12, 3-11 in the LEC.

Senior guard Karli Spera (Waterford, CT) scored the game's first two points on a layup with only four seconds gone from the clock, but the score remained close for the first nine minutes. With WestConn leading 16-12 with 11 minutes remaining in the half, a layup by senior center Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) sparked a 15-0 Colonial run to push the margin to 31-12 with just under five minutes left before intermission. The Beacons closed with a 9-4 run to make the score 35-21 in favor of WestConn at halftime.

WestConn stormed out of the locker room and held UMass Boston scoreless for the first four minutes of the second half, while adding five points at the offensive end for a 40-21 lead. A 3-pointer by senior Heather Lee (Seymour, CT) at the 13:24 mark gave the Colonials their largest lead of the game at 24 points, 52-28. UMass Boston narrowed the gap to 17 points three minutes later on a three by freshman guard Kendra Mosley (Indian Head, MD), but the WestConn lead remained 17 with two minutes to play. Senior forward Cammy Brown (Malden, MA) hit two layups to trim the lead to 13, but freshman Tequilla Lloyd (Wingdale, NY) hit a jumper to close the scoring and give WestConn a 63-48 victory.

Leading the WestConn offense were seniors Melissa Teel (Hamden, CT) and Karli Spera (Waterford, CT) who scored 18 and 17 points respectively. Teel led the Colonials with six rebounds, while Spera dished out a game-high five assists.

For UMass Boston, Mosley led all scorers with 21 points, collecting five three pointers on the afternoon to tie Indya Mitchell for the single-season record for three point field goals made in a season with 59. Freshman guard Senteria Renwicks (Baltimore, MD) pulled down a game-high seven rebounds for the Beacons. Playing in her 100th and final career game with the Beacons, Brown finishes her tenure with UMB tied for fifth all-time in career games played.

The Beacons season comes to an end with an above .500 record for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign while the Colonials are idle until Friday, Feb. 25 when they will host the winner of the LEC semifinal match-up featuring \#5 UMass Dartmouth vs. \#4 Rhode Island College.
